Chicago, Illinois
The show starts…
Why we were there: 57th Street Art Fair
When we were there: June 2024
Where did we go:
Our son recently started graduate school in Chicago, so we have made it a point to attend more shows in this region so we can work in family time! The 57th Street Art Fair is our first show in Chicago and we are excited to return to it next year too!
The first two days, and our first time visiting Chicago at all (!), we spent seeing the sights with our son and his husband. We explored their neighborhood in Lincoln Park and some street sights around DePaul University, including the DePaul Art Museum and Boystown (Northalsted). Saw some art, some objects, some houses, etc. The second day we had tickets to the Chicago Architecture Center and the river boat tour. It was great! Not only is the river tour a great way to spend the morning, there were excellent exhibits at the Center itself. There was a great exhibit/design contest that involved different firms repurposing strip malls into live/work community spaces. Unfortunately I can’t find a link for it on their website. But if just a few of these ideas ever made it into production we would be very lucky! You will see all sorts of pictures in the gallery below. The third day in the area we spend visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House. This house, the last of Wright’s prairie style houses is located in Hyde Park, right where the 57th Street Art Fair is. So we spent the day checking out this beautiful neighborhood and home of the future Obama Center. So maybe we can tour that…next time!
Things on our list for next time:
So many things! I believe the Field Museum has the most artifacts from the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition, so that would be very interesting to see. And, of course, the Art Institute of Chicago is also at the top of the list. Will I be able to convince Blake to take part in a mobster gangster murder mayhem ghost tour? Not sure, but we have some time to complete the list.
