Why we were there: Denver Art Festival

When we were there: May 2024

Where did we go:

We have been to Denver a few times now and not had time to wander, so this trip we took a day and did just that. We started by visiting the Margaret Brown House. One of my favorite things is touring old houses and this has been on our list of things to do in Denver for a while. Our docent was fantastic! She had been a docent there since she was 13 and now, 5 decades later, this is her full time retirement gig. She had been a pilot in the military and she was fierce as she told the stories of Margaret’s (Not “Molly”) life as a suffragette, philanthropist, and progressive activist. Next we visited the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art. This was truly amazing and I believe it is a hidden gem in Denver as many of the people we made friends with at the show had not been or heard of it before. Rooms and rooms of decorative arts displayed from each period. I could describe it as a mash up of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and the Menil Collection in Houston - but it is really indescribable, please visit. Plus loads of art from the Museum’s namesake Vance Kirkland. I had not known of his work, his dot paintings are incredible. There is a recreation of his studio which includes straps that suspended him in the air so his arms wouldn’t touch the canvases. There is a picture in the gallery below, in addition to some of my other favorite sites from the trip.

What is on our list for the next visit: We walked past the Clifford Still Museum and was impressed by the exterior, I imagine the interior is even better. Meow Wolf is on our list for the next visit and The Penrose Heritage Museum is all about The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and this is something Blake must tour and then we will take the train up Pike’s Pike without our car because I am told my car won’t make it.
